“Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. It is far better to take things as they come along with patience and equanimity.” – Carl Jung
When it comes to the question, “What matters most in life?” The root answer is almost always happiness. It’s the underlying motivator behind our deepest heart’s desires… the objective of pretty much anything we strive for. Happiness is what matters most in life. But not at the expense of truth, honesty, self-awareness, or the opportunity to grow from our pain.
We live in a society that tells us to chin up, and do everything with a smile. There isn’t time for tears.
But, that’s not healthy.
Inevitably, each and every one of us will encounter dark moments along our journey of life. This is part of the human experience. Such moments can bring us pain, confusion, anxiety and despair. But, why immediately push those feelings away? Why not stop and feel our feelings? When we don’t embrace our emotions, we lose out on important life lessons. When we DO embrace emotions, we witness the healing and strength of our own spirit.
Darkness is beautiful. When is the last time you tasted the salt of your tears? Witnessed the raw radiance of glossy-wet, sparkling eyes? Experienced the senses of release and comfort that come from a good cry?
Dealing with darkness is just a part of life. Don’t fight it. Give yourself a big hug, and let it out. Every single bit. Only then, will you see what you are truly made of. You’ll gain more powers in compassion towards yourself and empathy toward others than you ever imagined. And, most of all, you’ll appreciate the happy times even more.
