With lifestyle photography, the photographer must set the stage for stories to be told. This generally incorporates three main elements: setting, relationships and actions. The purpose of the shoot may be to document a specific milestone. And, other times, the client may just want to capture everyday life. No matter what the purpose of the shoot is, I always strive to capture the magic of everyday moments in my lifestyle photography sessions. Because, after all, that’s what our lives are made of…
Ruby contacted me about doing a cake mash session to document the first birthday of her little boy, Vinny. He had turned one a few months prior, but hadn’t had the opportunity to get first birthday photos done. Since Ruby had hired a photographer to do cake mash photos of her son Nicky (Vinny’s older brother), she wanted to do the same for Vinny. Both Ruby and Nicky would be participating in the shoot, but really the focus would be on Vinny, since we were documenting his One Year milestone.
Before I go into more details about the shoot, let me take a quick moment to give a big shout-out to Ruby. She is a full-time nursing student, who works full-time AND is the mother of two energetic toddler boys (ages 3 and 1). I am so impressed by how she is able to do it all, and she does it with such grace and love. I can tell that she is very involved in her children’s lives, and is an amazing role model for them. I was so honored to have the opportunity to work with her, and her two adorable sons.
Okay, so back to the shoot… Ruby wanted a setting that was nice and grassy, with lots of green. So, I selected Floyd Lamb Park for our session. (Yes, I’ve been doing a lot of shoots there lately, but really it’s such an amazing location. It offers tons of great spots, and lots of shade, which is really important in these warm summer months.) It proved to be the perfect choice!
There was plenty of room for the boys to run around. And, I got a nice little workout chasing them around with my camera. (With toddler shoots, a photographer must be prepared to run… a LOT.) Ruby brought matching ties for the boys, which really made the photos! And, she also brought balloons and a cake. Seeing how popular the cake was with the kids, I think I’ll be incorporating some kind of edible treat into all of my toddler shoots. It really seems to bring out those priceless expressions (as you can see in the photos below).
Vinny’s Cake Mash shoot was a blast. I feel that we really captured the magic of this family’s everyday life, as well as documented the important milestone of Vinny’s first birthday. This family was awesome, and I hope to work with them again.
Here are a few of my favorite photos from Vinny’s Cake Mash session…
