January 2014 Review: Finding What Works

Finding What Works

January 2014 played into my theme of “open and ready” by bringing opportunities to live it. I did things that scared me, but reminded myself that my desires are bigger than my fears. (In fact, it’s an affirmation that I will continue to chant quietly to myself: My desires are bigger than my fears.) When I felt overwhelmed and stressed out, I reminded myself to stay open and embrace the moment. Often, I would concentrate on the breath. Each inhale and each exhale, in and out.

This year’s goal plan and vision is a lot less structured and detailed than it was last year. But, it’s far more emotion-based, and I believe that’s what makes it all the more practical. I might not be able to articulate in detail, but I can feel it. I know it with every part of my being. (I also have the overall theme pinned on Pinterest here.)

I am proud to say that I nourished my soul and body this month, while moving forward and upward toward the direction of my dreams. With a strong foundation of trust, which I developed last year (and was even my theme for 2013), I realize that decision-making in 2014 is much easier. I waste less time in limbo, and instead seize the moment. I hope to continue that behavior.

The biggest challenges I faced were unexpected illness, which I thankfully recovered from; some unexpected expenses as well as annual expenses; and some purchasing temptations that I am glad to say I was able to fight.

I honored my theme and vision for 2014 by creating new rituals that are easy to keep up with on a daily basis (though I’m not taking them so seriously that I feel guilty when I miss them, but instead take the pressure off and just enjoy them); balancing the various aspects of my life in a way that flows naturally; making goal setting and strides toward achieving those goals simple, simple, simple; tracking each day of the year by writing down one significant thing that happened that particular day (it’s been really cool to look back and see where the month has taken me, and I’m sure it will be even cooler one year from now, when I see where I was each day exactly one year prior); and, finally, epiphanies about my business and legacy that have laid down the foundation for an awesome new business brand plan.

No, I never took down the Christmas tree. The garland is still decorating the staircase. And, my nutcracker sits out at this very moment. We have yet to put away our gifts from the holidays. And, I haven’t sent a “thank you” letter to my Grandma for the wonderful gifts she got me for Christmas (although I did leave her a voicemail). I haven’t booked the dentist appointment I’m due for. And, I haven’t called the business licensing office to find out why the license I just got a few months ago will need to be renewed in March.

But, all of those things can wait. I prioritized this past month. Everything is a trade-off. There is never enough time in the day for everything, and we must keep ourselves sane in the process. Life isn’t perfect. We aren’t perfect. And, that’s okay. As long as we are doing what absolutely needs to be done in the moment, and not getting obsessed with living way ahead of where we are now, we’ll be okay.

Life is too important to let slip by. So do what needs to be done, while experiencing the present. And, find what works! Only YOU can do that.
