Non-Technical Review of the Nikon D800

Non-Technical Review of the Nikon D800

I started working on a technical review of the Nikon D800, but got side-tracked by thoughts about what I’d learned while renting it. I certainly have a lot to say about the technical aspects of the Nikon D800 and how the experience has affected my purchasing decision. However, my ADHD prompted some good insight into the “what did I learn” aspect of the rental… and that is what I want to focus THIS post on!

But, first, here are a few pictures from my weekend. I selected these quickly and they don’t even do it any justice. I was in a hurry to get SOMETHING up, but I’ll be posting more photos soon…

More attention to setting up shots
Due to massive image sizes, there was less storage available on my SD card. (I shoot in RAW and JPG fine.) I only had room for about 300 images, instead of the usual 1,500. For this reason, I put more energy into the right shots. On Saturday, I’d used about 80% of my card. And, on Sunday, about 60%. This was a great lesson in discipline, and I passed.

Getting out and about
Dave and I used to be very adamant about exploring Southern Nevada on a regular basis. But, over the last year, we’ve gotten so busy and other tasks have taken precedence. For my rental weekend, we’d decided to make the most of the two days and pack each with non-stop activity. That way, I could really test out the camera, and Dave and I could spend some quality time together.

It was so nice to get outside, explore new places, try new restaurants and see beautiful Southern Nevada in all her splendor. We need to make a point of getting out and about more often – even if it’s just once or twice a month.

Packing light
I tend to bring way too much stuff with me when we go out with my camera. Because I was renting the D800, which is about 9.7 ounces heavier than my current body, I limited myself to what was absolutely necessary.

More variety
Like many photographers, I can sometimes get obsessed with a particular object or angle of that object. When you’re making an image, as opposed to taking a snapshot, you have a vision in your head of how you see the final product, but it can take a few shots until reality and desire meet.

While I certainly put careful attention in “creating images,” I also made a great effort to get many different types of shots at the one location. In addition, I shot the camera in various light, as to really test out its performance.

So what?
I’ll be providing a full-on technical review for all of you camera geeks soon. I promise! But, in the meantime, let me just say that the above mentioned items were those which I could experience without a D800. Maybe next weekend, I’ll imagine that my D90 is a D800. Because, in my opinion, shooting with the D800 made me a more focused photographer!

(By the way, in case you’re curious, the places we visited over the weekend included Boulder City, Hoover Dam Museum, Desert Breeze Dog Park, Nelson and Lake Las Vegas.)
